Just a couple of notes for you... All medals have a matching ribbon, but not all ribbons have a medal.  if an award was issued more than once, the subsequent award[s] are represented by adding a star to the ribbon.

Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS):  This is a designator that you earn while attached to any surface ship in the fleet.  To earn this, you have to learn, know and demonstrate knowledge in all major areas of the ship; weapons, engineering, damage control, navigation, communications, radar, etc...   You take a test, a murder board, then the chiefs board.  After completing all those tests, you are "pinned" and designated Surface Warfare (SW) qualified.  I am now ET2 Paul R. Pugh (SW)

Navy Achievement Medal (NAM):  I have 4 of these.  These are a personal award for personnel or professional achievement.

1st Award: ~End of Tour Award~ from Sicily, for 4 years of service there.  Lots of contributions, job performance, personal performance, etc.

2nd Award: This was for volunteering 6 months to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) center in Sicily.  I did around 200 tax returns for service member and families and communicated with the IRS with each return ensuring it’s complete and correctness.

3rd Award: This was for Training reservist with each radio and vehicle that we used at Beach Master Unit 2 (Virginia);  Also ensuring the 2 week operation on the beach was able to be complete, by further training and troubleshooting the reservists on the equipment.

4th Award: ~End of Tour Award~ for BMU2, for all my contributions while at the command to include training, installing of communication gear and creating a new communications platform for the new 7-Ton truck for the Navy.

Navy Unit Commendation (NUC):  The Navy Unit Commendation may be awarded by the Secretary of the Navy to any unit of the Navy or Marine Corps that distinguishes itself by outstanding heroism in action against an enemy (but not sufficiently to justify the award of the Presidential Unit Citation). It may also be awarded to a unit that distinguishes itself by extremely meritorious service not involving combat (but in support of military operations), which renders that unit outstanding when compared to other units performing similar service.  This was awarded for Sigonella’s participation in the Kosovo bombing campaign.
Navy Good Conduct Medal: This is awarded for every 3 years for good and faithful service.  I have 3 of these.

Good Conduct Medal:  This medal has only been issued 3 times in history. The first was during the Vietnam conflict, the second was the first Golf conflict, and the third time was the second Golf conflict.

Kosovo Campaign Medal (KCM):  This medal was award to those involved directly or indirectly with the bombing campaign in Kosovo in 1999.  Our station in Sicily was in support of those who did the bombing runs in Kosovo because our runway was used to house, fuel, maintain and arm the jets.

Armed Forces Service Medal:  This medal is awarded too those who serve in Sigonella,  Sicily for the base’s involvement in Operations Joint Endeavor and Joint Guard.

Global War on Terrorism Service Medal (GWOTSM):  This was issue to all the servicemen who are involved in the fight on the war on terrorism.
Sea service ribbon:  Awarded for each year at sea.  I have one.
Overseas service ribbon: Awarded for each year serving overseas.  I was in Sicily for 4 years, so that is one ribbon and 3 stars.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Medal:  This medal is awarded to unit who have involvement with NATO countries.  I gave flight briefs to pilots from Spain, Italy, Canada and Netherlands who were involved in the bombing campaign in Kosovo. I was awarded this twice… once for Yugoslavia and once for Kosovo.  Both Medals are the same, sort of, the top was issued for Yugoslavia and the bottom for Kosovo.  I was issued both but you don't get to wear both, I wear the first one with a bronze star to represent the second issue.
